We love our daily dose of hydrating lotion and anti wrinkle face cream, don’t we, girls? And what about those cracked heels and dried elbows(especially in the winter)? They need some special lotion potion as well.Have you got your favourites ? I’m sure you do.
But (here we go again) what exactly makes a good lotion good?Have you ever thought about it?Is it the way it feels, how well it absorbs, the way it smells or the ingredients it contains? Ideally all, right? But what if you had to prioritize your criteria, what would be on top?…have you got your answer? Cause i’m about to surprise you with some not so good ingredients commonly found even in the top brands of lotions and cream.
Parabens
-used for preservation(increase shelf life)
-high absorption rate
-have estrogen mimicking properties
-disrupt hormonal balance
-cause hormonal cancer, early puberty, birth defects
Coal/tar dyes
-potential carcinogenic
-may be contaminated with heavy metals
Fragrances
-contain hundreds of chemicals(not labeled)
-some of their components may be carcinogenic or neurotoxic but there is no way of knowing as their components are not listed
Kajoic Acid
-found in whitening products
-inhibits melanine production
-damages skin and makes it susceptible to cancer
Petrochemicals(mineral oil, vaseline, petroleum jelly etc.)
-clog pores and lock in toxins
-suffocate and dry the skin
-inhibit natural oil production
-increase skin dehydration
-accumulate in lymph nodes
-prevent absorption of vit.A
-linked to anemia, kidney degeneration, nerve damage in CNS
Phtalates
-help absorption and aid consistency
-declared carcinogenic by Dep. of Health and Human Sciences
-linked to birth defects and cell mutation
Diethanolamine(DEA)
-used to aid consistency
-easily absorbed
-interferes with Choline absorption(needed by unborn babies in womb)
-disrupts hormones
-may form cancer causing nitrates by bonding with other common ingredients
-risk of liver and kidney cancer
Needless to say that many of the ingredients that make the lotion feel good are actually not so good for you(and when you think that they get absorbed directly in your blood stream). Many of them are added to enhance absorption, regulate PH, increase shelf life, contributing to an illusion of “good” but they are not actually made of the real good stuff you find in nature (think natural oils, not petrochemicals)…It’s time to reevaluate your top choices and do a bit of digging and researching on this topic, don’t you think so?
You may be surprised to find out that making your own cream is not too difficult and doesn't require much investment or special set-up.Take a look at some of my tutorials below: DIY COLD CREAM DIY OIL FREE MOISTURISER
